AI Grading Handwritten Writing and STEM Work

Follow

Capture student handwritten work instantly (via doc cam, laptop, or phone camera) for AI scoring, helpful student feedback, and daily progress monitoring alongside data from ALL In learning's other student engagement tools and assessment methods, all in one place.

First, some requirements and recommendations:

  • Type of Assessment:  Must have a "Student Work (AI Graded)" or "Student Work (AI Graded, STEM)" question type.

  • Assessment has been activated: Activating for the Student Portal is recommended if you plan to post feedback there.

  • Different paper sheets for writing or STEM:
    • For STEM questions:  Go to the Classes tab, choose the roster, select all students, and click Print > Student Handwritten Sheets. These sheets have QR codes for auto-recognition of each student.
    • For ELA or writing questions:  Use any type of blank paper that is light-colored so that pen or pencil writing is clearly visible.

  • Camera quality is important:  It should be capable of 4K video or better (common for new doc cams and phones but varies for built-in laptop cameras).

  • Recommended grading setup:  Place pages on a desk with a doc cam or phone camera directly over them, minimizing shadows or glare. Not recommended: Holding a page up to your laptop camera (shaking and skew can hinder processing).

Best Practices

  • Make sure your camera is set to "allowed" for ALL In Learning. If you see a black screen where the camera view should be, then camera permission is probably turned off for ALL In Learning. Click the symbol next to the URL and the option to allow the camera for ALL In Learning is in the dropdown menu. Reload the page after toggling the camera.

  • Provide a clear picture. To best capture the student's handwriting, it's recommended to put the paper close to the camera, click capture, then hold still until the processing is over.
  • Retake the picture if needed. ALL In learning keeps the images you uploaded, so you can check it's quality. If the AI does not transcribe accurately, it didn't have a good view of the handwriting. You can always manually delete the transcription by clicking in the text box then take the photo again by clicking Back to Camera.

  • Use your smart phone. Logging into ALL In Learning on your phone's browser, launching the handwriting tool, and taking a picture with your phone is the best way to ensure the clearest picture for accurate transcription.
